Science! is a variety show. It's the best high school class you ever took, and it's also very much its own thing. Our production team consists of an LA standup, a working neuroscientist, and a podcaster who use their skills to curate a monthly show of science communication and comedy.
This month our science guest is Dr. Claudia Aguirre (Headspace, Skin Regimen, Dyson, Unilever, TED), a neuroscientist passionate about bringing science to everyone in a fun, digestible way. She travels the world lecturing on a broad range of topics from neuroscience to skin care, and everything under the wellness umbrella.
Our comedy guest is Laurie Kilmartin, an Emmy-nominated writer for CONAN on TBS, who, as a stand-up comedian, has appeared on CONAN, Last Comic Standing, Jimmy Kimmel Live, and Comedy Central. Her first book, Shitty Mom, was a NY Times bestseller. Her Seeso special, 45 Jokes About My Dead Dad, was named Vulture 's Top Ten Comedy Specials of 2016.
At Science! The Show we think Science is Awesome. Literally awesome:
'extremely impressive or daunting; inspiring great admiration, apprehension, or fear.'
The ability and methodology humans have to peer into the seething, entropic chaos that is existence and pointedly ask, 'so... what the @#*$ is this", is one of our greatest assets. Not only have the discoveries made through the scientific method helped us survived as a species and make cool stuff, but they've also shown us just how maddingly awe-inspiring the world around us really is. Did you know the night sky isn't just a two-dimensional sheet? How strange.
But in our world of 'fake news' and 'goop branded yoni eggs', science is undervalued, untrusted, and undermined. Not to sound all 'conspiracy' but there are some people who actively want you to mistrust and vilify your friendly neighboorhood scientists (1001 Herbal Cancer Cures Only I Sell That Your Evil Doctor Doesn't Want YOU To Know About, Liddia!).
Not only is a world mistrustful of science a dangerous world for democracy and human life, it's a world robbed of the awe-inspiring curiosity that's at the heart of the scientific endeavor.
To paraphrase the words of the greatest science communicator/ man named Carl of all time; a world where only the wealthy know enough about science to make informed choices is a shitty world for everyone. In his 1995 book, Demon-Haunted World the above-mentioned Carl (Sagan) writes:
“I have a foreboding of an America in my children's or grandchildren's time -- when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority".
Scary premonition, right? But in a lot of ways, that's the world we live in and that's why we do this. We also throw great standups in there to keep it fresh and fun. There's no reason it can't be fun.
Trust us. One of the three of us is a scientist!
