Dearest Dynasty Darlings (Da OG Triple D!),

Let's go ahead and start this weekly transmission with a FUN FACT: You (yes, you!) have the infinite wisdom of the entire universe in every cell of your body. Isn't that rad?? Yes, even on a Monday! Maybe even especially on a Monday? Sure, ok! This is something we remind ourselves over here at DTHQ several times a day, generally after bouts of angst or self doubt regarding our [path in life/mortifying past/mortifying future/bodies/etc] or [state of the city/state/country/world]. Or even other stuff! In any case, it's helpful to be reminded of a more magical, enchanting frequency, even if it's difficult to access a lot of the time. If this doesn't resonate or you prefer to wallow, we get it! Let's take a moment to connect on a BATSHIT FACT: Between 7pm and 3am on July 4th/5th, Angelenos set off a world record 18 TRILLION consecutive fireworks! This has been VERIFIED by everyone we've spoken to about it. Do you live in another city that you think may have eclipsed this number? Email us to provoke a fictional firework statistics-off!

In other news, with VAN(essa) representing on the East Coast for a little bit (is Virginia considered the East Coast? Sound off in the comments!), JAM(ie) had to find a suitable co-host for Dynasty Tonight! this past Saturday. A tall task indeed to find a human who could meet the ferocious talent of V, but luckily there was another V in the house: Vikki Flam aka Jamie's mom! As a Dynasty Tonight! regular, Vikki was able to summons Vanessa's spirit, kicking out the bad stuff, giving away prizes, and introducing the house band The Dynasties, much to the wonderful audience's delight! We all learned the hard way that Vikki is a CAPRICORN, not an AQUARIUS as Jamie told Sammy Twelvefingers to announce at the top of the show. Never been to a Dynasty Tonight! before and curious about words like "kicking out the bad stuff" and "Sammy Twelvefingers?" Well there's another one THIS SATURDAY, and hell, you should come on down and see it for yourself!

LOW TICKET WARNING NEVER LET GO is a “feat of ingenuity” (NY Times). This uproariously queer one-man show takes you back to the Ship of Dreams. It distills the three-plus hour epic and packs into one hour a surprisingly subversive punch. Kinnan, who grew up worshiping the movie and its iconic cast of characters, plays all of them with “perfectly executed comedy, pathos and homage” (ScotsGay Arts). As told by Rose, the play takes you on an intimate journey into the fateful romance that is shadowed by one of the most devastating man-made disasters of modern history – the sinking of the Titanic. NEVER LET GO is “a truly unique and absorbing high camp theatrical piece” (Culture Fix).

‍♂️ TUESDAY, 7/2, 7:00PM: The Benson Movie Interruption: Your Choice is a show where comedian Doug Benson (SUPER HIGH ME, @midnight) invites some of his comedy friends to sit in the front row of the theater with mics, cracking wise during a screening of a movie that YOU choose. That’s right, audience members are encouraged to bring a dvd/blu ray of a film they would like to see ripped apart (lovingly) and a vote will be held to determine which one we watch.

Danthony & Friends is a pop music odyssey about time, self, society, and perception — stuffed with psychedelic absurdity, philosophy, puppets, and unreasonably catchy bangers that will burrow into your mind and likely haunt you forever. All of this in a whimsical cartoon world. It’s maximum absurdity, high production jank that’s way more fun and far better than it has any business being.

DANTHONY is a musician, philosopher and performance artist. Is he a Grammy-nominated and 3x gold-record-earning engineer and songwriter with over 20 million streams and climbing? Yes. He’s also an LA 7 (at least) and incredibly humble and stylish to boot. Puppets and set by the incomparable EMMA BRADFORD.

Hey pretty Darlings,

Hope you’re able to scrape yer sticky self off the floor and give this a brief read. It’s flarpin’ HOT here in LA and we’re just human puddles scootin’ from one zone to the next. You know what’s the best way to BEAT said heat? AIR CONDISH. Something we are proud to say we have at the theater! AC really pairs best with entertainment, so in ADDITION to a temperature controlled environment, we’ve gone to great lengths to have the stage filled with some of the most amazing performers on the planet puttin’ on shows for you. Life updates: the squirrel won, and the ravaged corn has been pulled from Van’s yard. Personal updates: Jamie’s post-plant medicine journey glow has only slightly begun to dim, and we have stupid drivers and the heat to thank for that. Yeah, we said it, STUPID drivers. But Jamie does realize that ultimately it's about a failing driving educational system and likely latent ancestral trauma that causes these humans to forget to use the basic courtesy of engaging their blinkers and moreover that kinda the whole point of driving is generally to get from one place to another. So like, I don't know, maybe drive with a little more urgency and edge into the intersection when making a left hand turn? Just some ideas. Now, onto better vibes! THE GALE is an entirely improvised comedy show that premiered on the Groundlings stage in 2015 and has been sailing (I’m sorry) out performances ever since. Created by Chris Eckert, The GALE features some of the best and funniest queer (or LGBTQ) improvisational actors in the United States. Every so often, we get together and celebrate all the joyously queer things about the world. Why then, you might ask, do we title our show after a sometimes destructive weather pattern?

…Because queer folk have historically disrupted the normal ‘patterns’ of society, and often for the better. Be it Leonardo DaVinci or RuPaul, Martha P. Johnson or Harvey Milk, Barbara Gittings or Pedro Zamora, we’re constantly breaking through glass ceilings and using the shards to create intricate chandeliers of change, lighting the way for the next generation.

That was way too many metaphors. But you get it.

By the way, did you know DaVinci spent his free time drawing erotic doodles? When he wasn’t inventing, he was drawing dicks. Look that shit up.

A LIVE reading of the original Phantom Menace screenplay, with a wizard cast including some of the galaxy’s hottest stars (…and some surprises?!).

25 years ago, visionary filmmaker George Lucas showed us an astonishing world of podracing, Midichlorians, and battle droids, and we celebrated! On May 19th at Dynasty Typewriter, the guys behind Star Wars Minute and The George Lucas Talk Show were proud to present a LIVE reading of the original Phantom Menace screenplay, with a wizard cast including some of the galaxy’s hottest stars (…and some surprises?!).

The event was hosted by Pete The Retailer, Alex Robinson, and Patrick Cotnoir, featuring special guests Tawny Newsome, Haley Joel Osment, Diana Lee Inosanto, Laraine Newman, Eric Bauza, Vic Michaelis, Tony Hale, Krystina Arielle, Bobby Moynihan, Corin Wells, Mark McConville, Hal Lublin, Matt Gourley, and James Bladon. Musical accompaniment was provided by Chrysanthe Tan.

Hello there Darlings!

How’s everyone feeling? Great. Us too. (We’re sure we agree with the myriad of responses this question could garner. We are usually feeling ALL the things.) Right now, the Jam half (One Mr. Wonderful Jamie Flam) is on a bit of a #spiritualquest. He can fill you in on the details when he returns, but everyone brace yourself for some REVELATIONS! And re-pihanies! We’re all excited to see what revealed itself to him! The VAN half is not on a spiritual quest, but is on a warpath against garden pests. Any hot tips to get rid of powdery mildew and aphids? LET ‘ER KNOW. She’s growing a modest urban cornfield (30 stalks) and the aphids HAVE ARRIVED. The things google suggests are being done, but if you have additional tips, bring them on. Another enemy? THIS FLARPIN’ CONFIDENT-ASS THICC SQUIRREL. He’s eating the strawberries, he’s unphased by Van charging him with a shovel, he’s… making her want to EAT A SQUIRREL which had not been a fantasy prior to this year. Van’s having moderate success encouraging the crows she feeds to divebomb the squirrels, but apparently it’s nesting season so the crows are less attentive right now and the big-tailed rat is taking FULL ADVANTAGE. Whilst the crows’ away the squirrels will prey. Anyway! In more theater related news, we are working on a line of accessories we’re sure you’ll be obsess-oried with.

Hey Dyna-babes,

Happy Pride! Happy June! Happy all the happy things! Life has so many uncomfortable trappings, so ‘round these parts we try to celebrate every ding-dang thing we can. We encourage you do to the same. We’re determined to beat the June gloom with a June BOOM of abundant programming. Yeah, we got a fullll June (“Joon”) and the poster to prove it! It’s a flarpin’ WEEK we got going on, exciting things every night! Big cats on the big screen, a comedy show involving improv and a psychic medium (the real deal: she happened to connect VANessa and her grandma in an incredibly meaningful way ‍), and a special PRIDE edition of Dynasty Tonight!

Now, while we've got your attention... do you have any domestic or world travel recommendations? Like, where are the most enchanting places you've been? If you had a few weeks to go like anywhere, what would be at the top of your list? Is there a specific experience or meal you had that you think of all the time? We'd love to know! Hello there Darrrrlings!

Happy Tuesday masquerading as Monday! Speaking of Mondays, can you BELIEVE the Garfield film (née, The Garfield Movie) is out performing Furiosa?! We’re absolutely furious-a about it! But, we’ll get over it. And you know what? Chris Pratt NEEDED a win. We’re all about struggling artists. Here ends our “pop culture commentary segment.” Hope you loved it. Smash that like button, freaks!

We had a lovely long weekend just packed n’ pumpin’ with shows, including a Dynasty Tonight! which kept true to our trajectory of getting stranger and stranger. We debuted a new game, OPTICAL DELUSIONS in which unbelievably lucky audience members won FREE sunglasses and readers from our *world famous* lost and found. (Giving is the greatest gift of all 🥹) We’ve got another delightful Dynasty Tonight! this Saturday, you should totally come! Crazy lineup (Lizzy Cooperman, Sandy Honig, Jena Friedman, Arden Myrin! It’s always ladies’ night at Dynasty! ) join us and we can promise to provide: LIVE MUSIC. LAUGHTER. POPCORN. MAJOR PERSONAL BREAKTHROUGHS. AND GIVEAWAYS of something we buy OR find.

Ok, we’re about to get into the week, but first a little *world famous* #SockTalk 🧦. The people writing this letter are not elder millennials/Xennials. We are very very young. Honestly we were born so recently it’s SHOCKING and IMPRESSIVE we can even type. But, it’s come to our attention that Generation Z is coming for the socks of their elders. This weekend we learned that the classic ankle sock is now... eschewed. We urge everyone everywhere to be kind about sock choices, socks are PERSONAL. We said nothing when they came for the skinny jeans. We understood when they made fun of the camera-lag older people do when they make a video. But if we don’t speak out on this, IT WOULDN’T BE RIGHT. We understand every generation needs to stake a claim and carve a path, but… socks? Sure, the whole “Ok, Boomer” thing wasn’t/isn’t kind either, but many boomers (#notallboomers) were emotionally unavailable and worse to the younger generation, bought houses for what we pay for a month’s rent, and had the beauty of a college education actually getting them a job. This is something to complain about! (Not that it’s their fault. Everyone/many people are doing their best.) But we beg of you, leave people’s socks alone. Also, if you know cool socks that could replace ankle socks (no reason) please let us know. Addendum! One of us recently joined a gym (to maximize our youth) and just this morning we spotted a person wearing ankle socks that looked like they were in the know! So maybe it's not a thing at all? We're definitely not losing sleep over this! Anyhoo!

Hey there you sweet, sweet Darlings!

How you been holdin’ up on these mean streets? We’ve been blessed with just a flarpin’ PLETHORA of PALATABLE PROGRAMMING, and we admit… WE LOVE IT. This weekend was especially delightful, with a three show Saturday that included a trivia game show debut (with timewarps! Warp your own time, and watch any time this week!) , a jazzy music + stand up show all the way from a state called New York (!), and a livestreamed unhinged drag show (don’t miss the madness! Available all week and worth the price just to see Meat Skeleton’s 🥵 Mary Todd Lincoln.) Don’t know about yer boxes, but that day checks a helluva lot of ours.

Sunday brought us an epic livestream of the “Naboo Movie” and our stage was graced by an epic cast including Tony Hale, Lorraine Newman, Haley Joel Osment, and Bobby Moynihan. Bobby’s Darth Maul is maybe the best thing to ever happen to the franchise? Everyone brought their A+++ game, and it was one of our favorite livestreams EVER. Miss the fun? It’s not too late! You can still get and watch the stream this week!

Speaking of magical realms and far away galaxies, this weekend VanJam went to the distant world of Ye Olde Irwindale and The ORIGINAL Renaissance Pleasure Faire. And we were PLEASED. We did NOT go in costume, but by god let this be the last year for that regret! Next year we’re goin and we’re doinnnn’ it up! And by “it” we mean smashing our breasts as high as possible. Yes, both of us. DARE YE JUDGE!? Alsoooo, every year we go to the Ren Faire we come back thinking we need to do a Ren Night at Dynasty. Not sure what it would be yet, but it would likely involve harpsichords and mead and a risqué maypole situation. Would this be something you’d be interested in? Or is this just exciting to us? Full-on dress up Ren Nights? If this sounds like something that would delight you, prithee tell us here!

Oh here's a thing! On Friday night we're doing a first edition of DYNASTY'S WORLD FAMOUS $5 MOVIE NIGHT! It's the historic and famous night we just invented where you come to Dynasty and we take a bunch of movie suggestions than decide as a group which one to watch and then we watch it! And since it's Dynasty we'll figure out a couple weird flourishes to make it more enchanting/interesting. And since it's famously only $5, everyone is a winner! Bring some friends for some low pressure fun! And what the hell, dress up Ren Faire style or Naboo style or in any costume you want. We celebrate you. And THAT'S THE DYNASTY DIFFERENCE!™

🧠 4:00PM: A Better Trip Comedy + Science + Art + Psychedelics = A Better Trip Journey into the mind of a psychedelic astronaut with a consciousness-expanding comedy experience. At the intersection of science, humor, and psychedelics comes “A Better Trip,” the latest work from SHANE MAUSS!

Originally a residency at AREA15 in Las Vegas–this hilariously heady event highlights Shane’s personal psychedelic experiences and examines the history, science, and culture of psychedelics. Accompanied by a vivid display of mind-blowing visuals and custom animations that back the entire performance, this one-of-a-kind show articulates the psychedelic experience. Part trip report, part Ted Talk, all comedy show… this 90 minute performance is a celebration of the psychedelic renaissance.

FUCK THIS MONTH is a monthly improv comedy show that aims to cure your misery by turning your shitty month into improv comedy. Toast this garbage month off by throwing up your middle finger and sharing what made it suck so royally. A cast of veteran comedians will take your stories of woe and spin them into comedy gold.
