Dynasty Darlings,
Let's GET REAL and talk about weather, shall we? First off, it's like what even is it? We live in a solar system (side note: It's a solar system because the entire SYSTEM we live in REVOLVES AROUND THE SUN. Solar means sun! Ha!) where the weather changes. That is, the temperature and humidity and wind and rain and snow n' such is always in flux. Plus: Clouds! It's all a miracle and honestly something maybe we take for granted? Or maybe we don't! I don't know, we're all so different so who is anyone to say what anyone else is taking for granted. OTHER venues might not have this level of self awareness and compassion. Or DARE to open a marketing email talking about SYSTEMS we are living in. THAT'S The Dynasty Difference!™
Anyhoo, this is all to say that we're at the precipice of summer in Los Angeles (and apparently other places are on this precipice too!) and on overcast days like today it's commonplace to hear things from people like "Oh great, another cloudy day," or "When is it gonna be sunny every day again?," or "Sun, sun, me want sun!! Now! Me angry and me want sun!" And one of the two person team of VanJam that writes these weekly scrawls wants to promise all you SUN WORSHIPPERS that SUNNY DAYS ARE FOR SURE COMING. And guess what?? It will be really nice for a little bit! It'll be sunny and 75 and feel so good to be alive. ;)
But THEN, as happens ever ding dang year, it's going to get REALLY hot. And if you're like us, we're gonna sweat a lot, and need to use a ton of sun block and the sun block always gets in your eyes and it hurts real bad. And mosquitos are biting all the time, so you have to put on mosquito spray, and the mosquito spray gets in your eyes and hurts real bad. And then, the very same people who complained about the cloudy days are now saying things like "Sun, sun, me NO want sun!!" while one of us looks at them like I TOLD YOU! THIS IS NOT GOOD!
(Note that the other member of VanJam disagrees with this sentiment and only likes the sun. But the member of VanJam expressing this wants to remind everyone that GUESS WHAT? THE SUN IS ALWAYS THERE. Even on grey days, above the clouds, shining brightly! ((Side note, from the other member of VanJam who’s in the draft, that’s a GROSS mischaracterization of my weather opinions! But I do find sunny days to be IMPORTANT for mental health. I love a random gray day, also for mental health. But my desires is really a MIX of days and weathers. I accept weather! I’d like to add that the OTHER member of VanJam HATES wind. Hates it!) So it's safe to say that it's always sunny! In Los Angeles! lol! And I also recognize that summer is when there are vacations and parties and nostalgia and outdoor activities and respects it and even enjoys it sometimes. And honestly feels better about it now. Maybe summer is pretty good. Ok, welcome summer. Let's have some fun! ALL HAIL THE MIGHTY SUN WHICH EXISTS IN ALL OF US. Writing is how we process.)
This correspondence was about weather, but it was also about acceptance, and loving one another, and shining our lights, and asking for recommendations for tearless sun blocks and mosquito repellants. Also, got any hot tips for great summer reads, listens, eats?
Anyhoo again, here's our SUMMER FORECAST: 85% chance of tears from laughing at hysterical things expressed on our stage, 45% of tears from earnest connection that makes you look at the deep humanity in all of us, 0% chance of missing out on magic if you come to any show this week, which is INCREASED to a zero POSITIVE if you come out to every show this week. Worth mentioning: 122% chance of consuming the most delicious and interesting popcorn toppings in the entire universe. (You'll get to meet The Tastebudz very soon!)
