This Week at Dynasty: THE ONION! TIG NOTARO! BASSEM YOUSSEF! GABBY BRYAN! MAYA MURILLO! MICHELLE COLLINS! THE ACTION BOYZ! MISS COCO PERU! SETH GREEN
Well hello there Dynasty Darlings!
The end of Sweptember is fast approaching and we hope that you were positively swept off your feet these past few weeks. Traditionally the turn of phrase "swept off your feet" has a romantic context to it, and we are overjoyed for anyone in our community experiencing a version of that. But we are also overjoyed for anyone in our community who was literally swept off their feet this past week. Like a situation where you were in a room where someone was sweeping with a broom with such vigorand determination in their mission to rid of the floor of dust and debris that when they saw you in their sweeping path they were undeterred and just kept sweeping and when the bristles of the broom hit your high heels 👠 they gently lifted you off the ground. For a second that felt like a thousand, you were floating. It was unexpected and breathtaking. You returned to your feet, exhilarated. No one was hurt. Just two lonely souls in this Victorian parlor (did we mention you were in a Victorian parlor? Because this is all taking place in a Victorian parlor), one with a broom and a passion for a spotless floor (made of decorative mosaic tiling), and one who just went airborne with no warning, both looking into each others eyes, seeing all the possibilities in the universe being unveiled right before them. We'll let you fill in the lusty details from there. It’s your story after all. We’re just thankful to bear witness. Thank you for proving that being literally "swept off your feet” can also have a romantic context to it. :) ;) Keep sweepin’, honays!
In other news, JAM just got back from an epic Alaskan cruise with Mama Flam. Highlights included a magical train ride into the wilds in Skagway, seeing otters and totem poles in Ketchikan, nightly co-solving NY Times puzzles while trying every item on the dinner menu, and laughing constantly. If you got a cool mom like Vikki, we gotta recommend you book a cruise with them ASAP! Meanwhile, VAN's new dogter Cabbage🥬 is sporting a beautiful new vintage red dress and Herbert has taken on a paternal role with her, according to Oliver.
Also, there were so many amazing shows and events at Dynasty Typewriter last week and there are so many amazing shows and events are coming up at Dynasty Typewriter this coming week. We hope you go to all of them!
Sweep Dreams,

Award-winning comedic duo Arasha Lalani and Lily Abha Cratsley took the Dynasty stage with How I Met Your Masi—a smart, playful, and deeply personal show that reimagines the variety format.
Award-winning comedic duo Arasha Lalani and Lily Abha Cratsley took the Dynasty stage with How I Met Your Masi—a smart, playful, and deeply personal show that reimagines the variety format.
Through a series of flashbacks, Arasha and Lily shared the story of how their friendship transformed “from icy to spicy,” blending sketch, autobiography, and a wink toward the sitcom that inspired their title. With a mix of sharp writing, on-stage chemistry, and a parade of surprising guest stars, the pair built a world that challenged familiar narratives and put South Asian sisterhood at its center.
Calling their signature style “high-brown comedy,” Arasha and Lily delivered exactly that: a night that balanced sharp satire with heartfelt storytelling. The result was both hilarious and subversive, daring the audience to rethink how Indian-American women are represented on stage and screen.
And if the laughter, gasps, and cheers were any indication—the audience was fully along for the ride.
Featuring Rizwan Manji, Katie Marovitch, Anirudh Pisharody, JT Parr, James Tolbert, Francis C. Edemobi, Achintya Pandey, Matt Barrett Miller, Suni M!, Atul Singh, Fabian Mok, & Gabriella David

This Week at Dynasty: D(e)ad! JACKIE KASHIAN! JANINE HAROUNI! JON LOVETT! ANNA AKANA! HOW I MET YOUR MASI!
Hi Sweet Darlings,
😑 <— That’s us trying to smile!
🙃 <— That’s the world!
🕳️ <— That’s the criminally underused HOLE emoji that’s come to represent escape in our little world. We’ve (Van & Jam) been sending it to each other more than we’d like of late, but it’s nice to know that should we need to escape into a hole, we’d do it together. And do our best to really enchant the hole up with antique lamps and other stuff. 🕳️ 🏮🍸🥃 ✨
“A ‘moji’s worth a couple sentences.” - Pertruncula Dynasty, novice emoji user.
Hope you’re well and expressed and connected to a community that supports, uplifts, and CHALLENGES you. Yes, fellow athletes, we’re talking physical challenges. Where would we be without boisterous friends whipping us into a frenzy and helping us reach our PHYSICAL PEAKS’?? Think: Arm wrestling! Rope climbing! Pull-up comptetions! The (now outlawed?) “v sit and reach” which used to be part of the “Presidential Fitness Test.” (Insert a million low hanging jokes that would conjure this reaction: 😑 here). Just kidding, palms are sweating mom’s spaghetti just typing this! We’d love to volunteer ourselves as a safe place to support, uplift, and almost NEVER physically challenge you. ❤️
We had a crazy weekend with Ultimate Improv, a double dose of We’re All Gonna Die presented by Smosh, and Clean Plate Club - all of which you can enjoy from the comfort of your own place where you drag your screen. And now, we are thrilled to offer you a week chock full of uncensored comedy :)
VAN is heading back from a long weekend celebrating some family nuptials in Massachusetts, soon to be reunited with her new dogter, Cabbage, who looks exactly like a small Herbert The Dog (her dogson) and the anticipation is driving her mad. JAM is currently following up his Burning Man experience in the most predictable way ever: on a cruise to Alaska with Mama Flam. It’s only just begun, and they’ve already gotten the coveted Globe Trotting Trivia award. So, yeah. Hey, silver linings, take a look at THIS playbook.

BEHIND THE SCENES
Sweep Dreams! 💕 🧹
This Week at Dynasty: CHARLENE KAYE! MONTESSORI BOY! JON GABRUS! IZZY ROLAND! MICHAELA WATKINS! SMOSH: WAGD!
Dynasty Darlings,
Welcome to mid-September! Or as we’re calling it, 🍂 Sweptember 🍂: a month that invites you to be SWEPT away. This name originates, obviously, from the title of a tattered bodice-ripper novel we discovered in the secret, hidden Dynasty Bunker ™ when we moved into the space nigh on 8 years ago. When a building is nearly one hundred years old… Surprising History Accumulates (working title of a show we’re pitching to The History Channel or any other existing channel/app-space. We think of it as a kinda Storage Wars meets… boring history show thing. But with these charismatic hosts and those quirky property stewards with thistype of bizarre ephemera… SHA (Surprising History Accumulates) is ANYTHING but dusty! (Interested? BUY OUR SHOW IDEA FOR A MILLION DOLLARS OR FEWER!) Anyway, this aforementioned sexy old romance romp book we found was flarpin’ 🔥HOT🔥 (excerpt at bottom of letter!) and that steamy, throbby energywas what we were hoping to carry into this weird transitional month.
Instead, we’ve been getting even MORE of the, shall we say, intenselypolarizingbrainscorchingdystopianlifefracturing vibes that America has become absolutely no-no-noTORIOUS for. And as a result, the sweeping we’re interested in is less the romantic type and more the… revolutionary type. BUT aNyWhooooo! Comedy shows!!! 🫠🤪
We encourage you to get swept into a beautiful week of programming here at Dynasty! VANessa and JAMie had an offsite sweeping this weekend when they went to a reading at North Figueroa Books on Saturday (first time there! So sweet! They are expanding! Recommend!) The reading was by a dear friend of Van’s (who is now, of course, as life and love makes possible, a dear friend of both) from their new book of essays, Transanything. What was going to be just a lovely evening was made an Important evening by the reminder, through beautifully written words, that human expression, curiosity, evolution, and love are the WHOLE FLARPIN’ THING. 💕 This was EXACTLY what was needed right as The Burning Man glow was starting to fade from one of us and the descent into recent event-inspired rage and heartbreak was making the other one a haggard little crone. Maybe both were crone like? (Editor: Yes! Double crone!)
And now? We’re STILL croning out but with an inspired intensity that’s more rooted in positive self transformation than negative enemy elimination. So yeah, we’re in the sweet crone zone. 🧹 Mount yer brooms and Sweptember yourself into a reality you can peacefully exist in! (And tell us your secret!)

Dynasty Darlings,
Did y'all check out the lunar blood moon eclipse in Pisces last night? 🌖 🐠 To brag, at least one member of the team that writes these weekly Dynasty Typewriter marketing emails has their moon sign in Pisces. I know, right?! Like woah, ok, yeah, sure I'll take an extra layer of transformation. Thanks so much astrology! Needless to say, waking up this morning I noticed there was a little extra sparkle. ✨
Anyone else in our thriving community have their moon sign in Pisces? 🌖 🐠 Or sun sign? 🌞 🐠 Or rising sign? 📈 🐠 Or consume or think about fish in the last couple days? Or watch the 1997 comedy film Gone Fishin' starring Joe Pesci and Danny Glover as two bumbling fishing enthusiasts? Or go for a swim? Or take a bath or shower? If so, drop us a note and tell us about the state of your sparkle! We'd love to know if you've got any extra glow these days and what you attribute it to. And moreso, email us if you're in need of some sparkle in your life right now and we'll do our best to send some your way! Unironically! (Or ironically, upon request.)
To address the elephant in the theater: As was alluded to in a recent newsletter, yes one of us went to Burning Man last week for the first time. (It was me, Jamie! Hi!) And yes, it absolutely delivered as a significant life affirming experience. If anyone (everyone?) reading this has strong opinions about Burning Man and fear that the future of Dynasty will involve a major uptick in fire dancing, EDM nights, extravagant mutant car displays, wearable glow ephemera, and staff/performer/audience nudity, we've got unfortunate news: The legality of at least two of those things are being heavily researched. ;)
But yeah! I went into it with an open mind but also, admittedly, a lot of hesitation over all the judgment and stereotypes associated with it. What I can say is that it was indeed all the things I've heard, and the weather and dust and heat was as challenging as advertised. But it was also so much more! Like anything as massive as this, I felt like I only scratched the surface of its offerings and can't claim to be an authority on any of it, but I will say that for me there was endless enchantment and adventure, and the spirit of 80,000 people bringing their art, ideas, creativity, kindness, playfulness, and generosity to one place was palpable beyond words. It was a beautiful reminder of the magical community of artists we've been cultivating at Dynasty and provided a nice burst of extra inspiration as Vanessa and I continue to hone the vision of our theater as a ceremonial place of wonder and expression as we approach our 8th year (!) since opening.
If there's one takeaway to impart, it is always to DIVE. It's been one of our mantras from the beginning, but as we’ve learned it’s a lesson we’ve needed to learn over and over again. Whether it's starting a new creative project, learning how to use a new InstaPot™, or going to an annual event centered around the burning of a massive effigy, just stop thinking and dive in and trust that the universe will take care of the rest. To that point, after Burning Man I spent two nights in beautiful Nevada City to decompress and at the suggestion (insistence?) of two shopkeepers I chatted with, I found myself driving a winding, unpaved road to the Yuba River, hiking down a steep, rocky hill, and jumping in the river without hesitation. This is significant because historically I am not one to go to rivers, let alone go inside of rivers. And it was glorious! So yeah, dive. Sometimes literally!
Have you been to Burning Man? Do you hate it or love it? Thinking about going at some point and want to hear more? Did you give birth to an unexpected child there last week? Need a push off a metaphorical diving board? Let us know!
In the meantime, read below for all the exciting things happening at Dynasty Typewriter this week!
🤿,

Rotting Flesh Gives Way To Hope
This Week at Dynasty: NICOLE BYER, SARAH SILVERMAN, DREW CAREY, CHUCK TINGLE, DROPOUT, DRAG, and DR. Z!
Sweet September Darlings,
☀️ 🍂 Welcome to the blustering, blistering month of SWEPTEMBER, we hope you’re ready to be swept off your flarpin’ feet! We have such a beautiful bevy of programming ahead of us, we’re begging to be whiskkkkked away [from the dystopian hellscape we are all forced to navigate] and lovingly carried into experiences that will expand, enchant, and inspire.
JAMie is back from Burning Man, but not yet BaCk 2 ReAliTEA (also the name of an audio journey he’s currently recording in his car). You can expect next week to be chock full of DOWNLOADS from the playa, tips on how to beat the heat, and maybe a fashion column? VAN has been making her own passion fruit jam. The vine that last year granted 3 passion fruits is showing up and showing OUT this year! Did you know that the shells of passion fruit actually have pectin in them and you don’t have to ADD pectin to make a soft set jam with these? Do you know how easy it is to go from being a mildly interesting person to being a person who thinks writing about soft set jam is HOT CONTENT?!
This week, you’ll have to settle for a sparse welcome to this month. In other parts of the country, the foliage may be beginning to turn, the sweaters being pulled from storage, and people talking about soup weather. In LA we know this month is Summer’s slooty drunk aunt who just doesn’t know when it’s time to leave the dance floor. It’s gonna get sweaty and messy.
But while we can’t admire the changing of the leaves, we are finding wholesome joy in watching the colors of lesions and open sores slowly turn and ripen on a certain elected Predator. 🍁 Perhaps it’s just us getting old and sentimental, but we like to think something may be withering and dying. Almost beautiful, for something to physically transform into the rancid rot it’s been emotionally for years. Wow. 🌈 It may amount to nothing, but this weekend felt like a glimmer of hope in a sea of sewage.
Rottingly,
VanJam
